Lindau on Lake Constance

Lake Constance’s unique location in the four-country region offers singles, couples, and families with children a wide and varied range of options for truly enjoying their vacation.

Lake Constance - unparalleled in its beauty

In addition, the region’s two “metropolises,” Konstanz and Friedrichshafen, continue to captivate new visitors year after year with their cultural offerings. Whether by land or by water makes no difference. Whether relaxing in one of the thermal spas, unwinding on a boat cruise, or strolling through museums, castles, and palaces - that’s how you experience the enchanting charm of Lake Constance. But active vacationers can also enjoy themselves both along the Lake Constance Bike Path and while hiking up the Alpstein Massif.

The Island of Lindau - Both a Tourist Destination and an Oasis of Relaxation

Our small island of Lindau is located at the eastern end of Lake Constance. With nearly 3.000 residents and an area of approximately 68 hectares, this gem of the region is the second-largest island in Lake Constance, after Reichenau. Despite its relatively modest size compared to the surrounding area of Lake Constance, Lindau offers numerous attractions that every visitor can look forward to.

The Entrance to Lindau Harbor

Germany’s southernmost lighthouse graces the entrance to Lindau Harbor. Standing nearly 33 meters tall - and don’t forget the 139 steps - the “New Lighthouse” is the city’s landmark. The panoramic view of the Alps from Bavaria’s only lighthouse is breathtaking. From April through September, the lighthouse is open to visitors daily from 11 am to 6 pm However, opening hours may vary depending on weather conditions. A distinctive feature of Lindau’s harbor entrance is the 6-meter-tall sculpture of the Bavarian lion.

The Historic District of Lindau

The Catholic "Cathedral of Our Lady," the "Old Town Hall," the "Diebsturm," St. Peter's Catholic Church, and the secularized Barfüßer Church (now the Lindau City Theater) adorn the Lindau city skyline. Most of these buildings date back to the 14th and 15th centuries and make the Old Town a picturesque setting that is second to none. Even at night, some of these structures can be viewed during city walking tours.

The Lindau City Theater

It opened in 1951 and features plays, opera, and ballet productions from various theaters across the German-speaking world, as well as an international concert series featuring chamber music, cabaret, and variety shows. The venue has approximately 700 seats (stalls and two balconies) and an orchestra pit. You can find events here.

Concerts in Lindau

Every year, our Cultural Office in Lindau organizes wonderful evenings centered on music at various venues. You'll be impressed by both the performances and the venues. You can find the events here.

Exhibitions in Lindau

Temporary exhibitions by well-known artists at the Kunstmuseum am Inselbahnhof provide cultural highlights during your vacation. You can find the current exhibitions here.

Maximilianstraße – Shop & Enjoy

Lindau’s 230-meter-long shopping street is not only a delight for visitors looking to shop, but also for “curious” vacationers who can take in the splendor of the old merchants’ houses. Surrounded by cafés and restaurants on bumpy cobblestone streets, Maximilianstraße exudes a unique historical atmosphere that you shouldn’t miss during your visit to Lindau.

The Garden City

Thanks to Lake Constance’s maritime climate, Lindau has even more to offer than just architectural masterpieces. Biodiversity and a love of nature were also highly valued by the elite families of Lake Constance. Magnificent old trees in the background, villas from days gone by, and the Lindau Garden Culture Trail amaze guests from all over the world. For larger groups, there’s even a botanical tour of the island.
